Eight Golden Retriever Care Tips
All dogs require grooming and golden retrievers are no exception. Golden retrievers are double coated types of dogs. During the rainy or winter season, its double coat protects them from cold and when warm weather comes, the golden retrievers shed its undercoat as it will not need it anymore. These dogs do shed but you can considerably minimize the hair in your house by doing some basic maintenance.
·Frequent brushing using a bristle brush and undercoat rake will minimize shedding. With this, you will have fewer hairs throughout the house to clean up and at the same time, you will have some quality time with the retriever. A sick or stressed out Golden retriever will show severe shedding of its hairs that will result to being bald. You might need to consult your local veterinarian for medical help.
·Bathe your Golden retrievers regularly. Regular bathing will not damage the coat or the skin of a Golden retriever so feel free to bathe your dog as often as you want. The secret to keeping the golden retriever clean is by making use of a quality shampoo.
·Clipping of nails should be done regularly. Dogs with long nails are uncomfortable for anyone they may play with and it can cause the dog's foot to splay. Check the Golden retriever's nails regularly and trim them as necessary using nail clippers for dogs. Just be careful not to cut close or you may accidentally clip some skin with it. In case you do accidentally clip some skin, you may use some styptic powder. This will stop the bleeding faster. A good advice is to do a weekly trimming of the nails, clipping off in small bits.
·Do not shave your Golden retriever. The coat is important for the golden retrievers because it helps them protect themselves from any type of weather. There are other parts of the golden retriever that you can trim like the ears, feet and tail. You can use grooming shears to clip the hair in the pads.
·Clean the ears both internally and externally. You can use thinning shears to cut the hairs inside the ears. You will need also to trim the hair covering the external part of the ear. Cleaning the ears is one of the basic requirements to keep your Golden retrievers healthy. Regular ear cleaning will help prevent ear infections. It is a good practice to clean the retriever's ears weekly using a good cleansing solution for the ears.
·The tail of the Golden retriever should also be trimmed. You can curl the end of the tail, place you thumb below the tip of the tail bone and cut the hair near your thumb. Then, work your way up to the base of its tail forming a fan.
·Golden retrievers will need exercise everyday and each dog may have different exercise requirements depending on the dog's age. Golden Retrievers have the tendency to become obese so regular exercise is a must.
·Golden retrievers are very close to its owner and leaving them alone in a room will make them distressed and sad. You need something to keep them occupied like giving them toys.
