Nine Gardening Tips For Beginners
Gardening is a good pastime because it is very relaxing and fulfilling to see your plants grow and mature. You can plant vegetables or flowers on your garden depending on what you like. However, it can also be frustrating if you are not successful in growing your plants. These simple tips might help you grow plants successfully.
*If you are just new to gardening, you might want to consider a smaller bed, preferably 5 x 5 feet. You are still learning the ropes and having a big garden might overwhelm you. Anyway, it will be easier to make more beds once you have already the experience and techniques in raising plants. Make sure that the bed is exposed to sunlight as this is important.
*Buy small plants from nurseries rather than planting using seeds. More experience is required when you want to plant from seeds while small plants from nurseries are easier to grow because it has already developed its root systems.
*Choose plants that grow well in your place. Ask advice from your local nurseries on which plants suit best in your area. If you have enough experience already in gardening, you can start planting those which are hard to grow. Choose also the plants that you like. It is pointless to make a garden if you do not like the plants growing on it.
*After buying from your local nurseries, you need to transfer the plants to your garden. You need to take off the seedlings from its container and loosen a bit its roots. It is important that the roots do not dry so you have to work quickly. It is advisable to plant early morning or late in the afternoon to avoid dehydration of the plants due to too much heat.
*Start planting by starting at the rear end of the bed to avoid stepping on the plants after it is planted.
*Make a hole on the bed using a trowel. The depth of the hole should be deep enough for the root ball. The plant's crown should be leveled with the soil surface. You may need to water first the soil before planting so that the roots are readily hydrated after planting.
*Get the plant and place the plant on the hole. You can adjust the depth of the hole as necessary using a trowel. Make sure that the root ball is touching the soil surface in the hole before putting soil throughout its roots. Make sure also that the root systems are entirely covered by soil.
*Continue planting the rest of the plants as you work your way towards the front end of your bed. Make sure that there is enough distance between plants to give each plant enough room to grow. Plants which are very close to each other will compete for sunlight and minerals in the soil. This will lead to poor growth of your plants.
*Cultivate the soil around the plants to encourage root growth and to remove unnecessary vegetation in your bed as these will compete also with your plants.
*Water your plants immediately after planting. A watering can or a hose can be used to water the plants.
You have just made your first garden. Watch your plants grow over time!
